As part of institutional openness and the strengthening of international partnerships in the maritime transport sector, the General Company for Ports of Iraq held a virtual meeting today, Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The meeting was chaired by the company’s Director General, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, with the participation of Eng. Hanadi, Director of the Al-Faw Grand Port Project Authority, alongside a consultant from the Hamburg Port Authority in Germany. The meeting was also attended by the Regional Director of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Iraq, as well as the agency’s representative in Basra Governorate.

The discussions focused on mechanisms to enhance technical and institutional cooperation between the parties, contributing to the transfer of global expertise and the application of best practices in port management and operations, in addition to supporting Iraq’s strategic infrastructure projects.

The Director General emphasized: “The General Company for Ports of Iraq is moving forward at an accelerated pace to implement its strategic projects in line with the highest international standards, foremost among them theAl-Faw Grand Port project, which represents a pivotal turning point in the future of the Iraqi economy.”

He added: “Strengthening cooperation with global port institutions, particularly the Hamburg Port Authority, is an important step toward improving institutional performance and transferring technical expertise, thereby supporting Iraq’s vision to become an effective regional logistics hub within the Development Road project.”

This meeting is part of a series of engagements conducted by the General Company for Ports of Iraq with international partners, aimed at accelerating the implementation of strategic projects and reinforcing Iraq’s position on the global transport and trade map.
