Iraq has reiterated its steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety of seafarers. This affirmation was made during its participation in the thirty-sixth extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), convened to discuss the implications of rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Oman.
The session, called by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Domínguez, was attended by Captain Mazin Al-Kaabi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the IMO and Maritime Attaché at the Iraqi Embassy in London, alongside Ms. Alia Ihsan Al-Sayegh, First Secretary in the Embassy’s Political Section, responsible for international organizations and multilateral relations.
In his intervention, Captain Al-Kaabi emphasized that “Iraq is firmly committed to safeguarding seafarers on board vessels, particularly in areas experiencing tensions or incidents of detention.” He stressed that “this position is grounded in humanitarian principles and aligns with the IMO’s objectives of enhancing maritime security and safety.”
He further noted that Iraq’s commitment extends beyond diplomatic engagement, having been translated into practical measures. Teams from the General Company for Ports of Iraq, in coordination with relevant authorities, have provided support and assistance to rescue crews of vessels involved in incidents beyond Iraqi territorial waters. This initiative reflects a high level of preparedness and a spirit of international cooperation in addressing maritime challenges.
Contributions during the session called for de-escalation and avoidance of confrontation, while underscoring the importance of maintaining the smooth flow of global trade and safeguarding the lives of those working in the maritime sector, amid growing concerns over the impact of geopolitical tensions on one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
