On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, announced that the company held a meeting with the Omani side, attended by the Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman and several officials from Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology. The discussions focused on activating maritime and land transport routes between the two countries and strengthening logistical cooperation.
The Director General explained that “the meeting builds upon the talks held during the recent visit to Oman, and it concentrated on facilitating the flow of goods between Omani ports and Um Qasir Port, with the aim of eventually linking them to Al Faw Grand Port as part of the Development Road project.”
He added that “both sides examined mechanisms for Oman’s accession to the Development Road corridor and its associated shipping lines, which would provide traders with operational and logistical facilities that reduce costs and accelerate cargo movement.”
He further noted that “the meeting also addressed ways for Oman to join the quadrilateral memorandum of understanding signed between Iraq, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, which seeks to coordinate efforts to establish and operate the Development Road as a strategic corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe through Iraqi territory”.
