On Sunday, February 7, 2026, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, convened a coordination meeting with the ministerial team and the coordination group—comprising Iraq’s representative to the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) and Iraq’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The meeting was attended by Ms. Gérardine Delannoy, representative of IALA, to discuss mechanisms for enhancing technical and institutional coordination and advancing navigational systems.

The Director General stated that “the presence of the IALA representative in the meeting with the ministerial and coordination teams marks an important step in strengthening direct technical cooperation. It reflects the commitment of both sides to unify perspectives, exchange expertise, and address operational details on the ground.”

He emphasized that “this participation enabled in-depth discussions on technical aspects related to the development of marine aids to navigation systems, training and qualification programs, and mechanisms for technical and advisory support. These efforts will accelerate the implementation of joint programs and ensure their alignment with internationally recognized standards.”

He added that “the coming phase will witness intensified efforts among the relevant entities, greater exchange of information and expertise, and stronger support for training and qualification programs. This will contribute to enhancing the efficiency of marine aids to navigation systems and achieving the highest levels of maritime safety and environmental protection.”
