On Monday, January 5, 2026, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, chaired a meeting to discuss the pilot project for planting mangrove trees in the intertidal zone between the eastern breakwater and Ras Al-Bisha in Al-Faw. The meeting was attended by representatives from the University of Basra – Marine Science Center, along with specialized staff from the company.

The Director General stated that “the meeting aimed to review and discuss the project’s presentation,” emphasizing that “this initiative is part of the company’s efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability and protect marine ecosystems in coastal areas.”

He noted that “the pilot project contributes to supporting scientific research and environmental experiments in Iraq, and represents an important step toward integrating environmental innovation into port infrastructure development plans.”

Dr. Al-Fartousi affirmed that “the company will continue to monitor the project’s outcomes and expand its scope in ways that serve the marine environment and reinforce the sustainable operational readiness of Iraq’s ports.”
