Dr. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, announced on Monday, January 5, 2026, that Al-Faw Grand Port has entered an advanced stage in preparation for the commencement of full commercial operations in 2026.
During a press conference, the Director General stated that “the company has completed the preparation of the navigation channel and the main berths of the port, and has received the first vessels as part of trial shipping lines.” He added that “work is ongoing to further develop infrastructure and strengthen maritime and land connectivity with regional and international ports.”
He further explained that “the port’s projects include connecting roads and an integrated transport network to facilitate the movement of goods, in addition to expanding storage capacity and processing petroleum derivatives, thereby ensuring enhanced operational readiness and competitiveness at both regional and international levels.”
Dr. Al-Fartousi emphasized that “Al-Faw Port today represents a strategic pillar within Iraq’s vision to become a major logistical hub between the Gulf and Europe,” noting that “continuous coordination is underway with government agencies and international organizations to guarantee the success of full operational activities during the coming year”.
