The General Company for Ports of Iraq celebrated today, Saturday, December 20, 2025, the completion of the installation of all segments of the immersed tunnel within the Al Faw Grand Port project. This milestone marks the conclusion of one of the country’s most prominent strategic engineering endeavors, and the first tunnel of its kind in the Middle East.

A formal and public ceremony was held at the project site in Basra Governorate, attended by officials, engineers, journalists, and citizens. The event included a field tour inside the tunnel following the installation of all its concrete segments, as well as fireworks displays enjoyed by the city’s residents.

Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the Company, stated: “The completion of all immersed tunnel segments at Al Faw Grand Port represents an unprecedented engineering achievement at the regional level. It reflects the capability of Iraqi expertise to execute complex projects in line with the highest international standards.”

He added: “This project is the fruit of significant national effort, alongside the executing companies and foreign consultants. It constitutes a pivotal step in linking the two banks of the navigation channel and strengthening the port’s logistical infrastructure.”

The ceremony witnessed broad participation from project engineers who contributed to various stages of implementation. The tunnel was also opened to the people of Basra for a special introductory tour, aimed at engaging the local community in the achievement and highlighting its economic and service importance.

GCPI immersed tunnel forms an essential component of Al Faw Grand Port system, one of Iraq’s largest strategic projects. It is expected to facilitate transportation flows and reinforce the country’s position on the regional and international trade map once it enters service in the subsequent phases of the project.
