On 7 December 2025, the activities of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member State Mandatory Audit Program commenced in the Republic of Iraq, with the participation of entities operating in the Iraqi maritime sector and supporting institutions. The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq.
In his opening remarks, the Director General welcomed the attendees and emphasized the importance of such programs, noting that they represent one of the most effective tools for strengthening maritime safety and protecting the marine environment. He further highlighted their role in facilitating the exchange of expertise with the IMO, the world’s leading authority in maritime affairs.
Dr. Al-Fartousi explained that these programs serve as “a gateway to maritime development and a support to Iraq’s efforts in advancing its maritime sector.”
He stressed that the shared objective between Iraq and the IMO is to achieve a safe and modern maritime environment aligned with international standards.
At the conclusion of his speech, the Director General expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the representatives of the IMO and all participants, calling for intensified efforts to enhance and develop the performance of Iraq’s maritime sector.
