On Thursday, December 4, 2025, Prime Minister Eng. Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani attended the ceremony marking the completion of the first section of the Development Road, extending 63 kilometers and linking Al Faw Grand Port with the international highway in Basra Governorate.

The Prime Minister emphasized that “this road represents one of the most important pillars of the Al-Faw Port and Development Road project,” underscoring the government’s strong commitment to this initiative, which he described as “one of the most significant achievements in the history of the Iraqi state.”

He added that “the inauguration of the first phase of the five berths, along with notable progress in the construction of the immersed tunnel and the navigation channel project, reflects remarkable advancement compared to the 20% completion rate recorded when the government assumed responsibility for the five core projects.”

Al-Sudani affirmed that “the project embodies the government’s transition from a rentier economy to one that relies on supporting the agricultural, industrial, and commercial sectors, through the implementation of vital projects and the establishment of infrastructure that serves as the main driver of national economic growth.”

He further noted the importance of continuous engagement with regional and international partners to strengthen investments and establish economic partnerships that foster stability and prosperity.

The Prime Minister highlighted that “the government has worked in coordination with local authorities in Basra Governorate, supported by both official institutions and the public, to overcome obstacles and achieve tangible progress in project implementation.” He pointed out that “the High Committee for the Development Road continues to convene regularly to ensure the fulfillment of execution requirements, with the participation of a national cadre drawn from the people of Iraq.”

The Development Road extends from the gate of Al Faw Grand Port to the Khor Al-Zubair channel, passing through the immersed tunnel and reaching Um Qasir to connect with the international highway (Safwan Road). The project also includes the construction of two bridges, one measuring 800 meters and the other 400 meters in length.
