In the presence of the Prime Minister, Iraq has formally received the first section of the Development Road project, connecting Al-Faw Port to the city of Safwan.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, announced today, Thursday, December 4, 2025, the handover of the initial section of the road project, which constitutes the opening phase of the Development Road—one of the country’s most strategic transport initiatives.
The handover ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Eng. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Minister of Transport Mr. Razzaq Mohaibis Al-Saadawi, along with senior officials from the transport sector, following the completion of the core construction works for the 63-kilometer section.
The Director General stated: “This event marks a pivotal step in supporting the operation of Al Faw Grand Port and effectively linking it to the international road network.” He emphasized that the completed section passes through the immersed port tunnel and includes two major overpasses, in addition to several reinforced concrete culverts of both tubular and box types.
He further explained: “The completion of this section establishes a new operational phase within the Development Road project and paves the way for enhancing the efficiency of commercial transport between the southern ports and the western borders.”
This achievement forms part of an integrated plan to modernize Iraq’s road network, contributing to improved regional transport and more effective connectivity between ports and vital economic zones. The project is regarded as one of the most significant strategic undertakings within Al Faw Grand Port development.
