The General Company for Ports of Iraq announced today, Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the signing of an agreement with the Dutch company Fugro to conduct a comprehensive survey of the Al-Faw maritime channel and to produce internationally accredited Admiralty charts through the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. This initiative forms part of the contractual requirements for the construction of Al Faw Grand Port.

Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the Company, stated: “The agreement includes equipping the channel with an intelligent lighting and navigation system, similar to airport runway technologies, with the aim of attracting international shipping lines and reducing marine insurance costs.”

This step reflects Iraq’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and to elevate safety and navigation standards at Al Faw Grand Port upon its commissioning. It is expected to enhance the port’s capacity to receive mega-vessels and to stimulate global trade flows.
