The General Company for Ports of Iraq is preparing to commence installation of the final concrete segment of the Ports Tunnel (the immersed tunnel), one of the most significant projects of Al Faw Grand Port. This step marks the concluding phase of construction beneath the waters of Khor Al‑Zubair.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al‑Fartousi, Director General of the Company, stated: “The final segment measures 126 meters in length, and its completion will bring the total length of the tunnel to 2,444 meters.”
He added: “Completion of this segment will enable full connectivity between the Faw side and the Um Qasir side through a passage running approximately 30 meters below sea level. This stage is considered one of the most critical phases of the project due to its technical sensitivity and construction precision.”
Engineering teams anticipate that installation of the final segment will represent a turning point in the project’s execution schedule. The tunnel is regarded as the first of its kind in the Middle East in terms of construction technology and scale of implementation.
