Dr. Eng. Farhan Al‑Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, announced the full completion of excavation works for the new navigation channel, one of the five key infrastructure projects of Al Faw Grand Port.

The Director General stated that “the channel has reached a 100% completion rate, with a final depth of 19.8 meters, extending over a distance of 23 kilometers and a width of 200 meters. It constitutes a vital part of the Khor Abdullah waterway.”

He further noted that “procedures for accrediting and registering these depths with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) are currently underway, following a field survey of the navigation channel conducted by an independent third‑party entity.”

This project forms part of the government’s broader plans to strengthen Iraq’s port capabilities and facilitate the movement of large vessels, thereby contributing to enhanced trade exchange and improved logistical efficiency—particularly in anticipation of the imminent operation of Al Faw Grand Port.
