The General Company for Ports of Iraq announced today, Sunday, November 16, 2025, the completion of the transfer of the final segment of the Ports Tunnel (the immersed tunnel) within the Al Faw Grand Port project. This milestone marks a critical step toward the final stage of submersion beneath the waters of the Khor Al-Zubair channel.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the Company, stated: “The last segment of the Ports Tunnel—the ninth concrete unit—was moved today from the fabrication basin to the logistics quay for preparation and readiness ahead of the submersion process.” He added that “this operation represents a decisive transition toward the commencement of the final connection stage between the concrete units.”
He further explained: “The segment that has been moved will be positioned between the eighth and tenth units, thereby completing the linkage between the elements. Once this segment is aligned, the total length of the tunnel, including its approaches, will reach 2,444 meters, of which 1,260 meters will be immersed under water.”
The Ports Tunnel (immersed tunnel) constitutes one of the most significant infrastructure components of Al Faw Grand Port. According to engineers involved in the project, it is the first of its kind in the region in terms of design and execution requirements.
