On Friday, October 31, 2025, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, announced the commencement of the installation of the tenth segment of the immersed tunnel, part of the Al Faw Grand Port Project. This milestone marks a significant advancement in the execution of one of the country’s largest strategic infrastructure projects.

The Director General stated, “Today we began the installation of the tenth segment. Upon completion of this phase, the total length of the immersed tunnel will reach 2,192 meters, with only two segments remaining—the ninth and eighth—measuring a combined length of 252 meters.”

He further explained, “Following the placement of the tenth segment, we will proceed with the installation of the eighth, followed by the ninth segment. The ninth and tenth segments will form the final seal of the tunnel, connected by a steel frame into which concrete will be poured to fully close the tunnel and ensure its structural integrity.”

The immersed tunnel, a component of the Al Faw Grand Port Project, is the first of its kind in the Middle East. It will connect the port to the international highway leading to Basra and is being constructed using advanced engineering techniques by specialized global firms under the supervision of the Italian consultancy firm Technital.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance logistical connectivity between Iraqi ports and regional and international transport networks. It will serve as a cornerstone of the Development Road initiative that the Iraqi government aims to realize in the coming years.
