On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the General Company for Ports of Iraq announced a significant engineering advancement in the immersed tunnel project at Al Faw Grand Port—one of the Middle East’s most prominent infrastructure undertakings. The announcement coincides with the immersion of the seventh concrete segment and the preparation of the tenth, marking a strategic step aimed at accelerating progress within the planned timeline.

Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the Company, stated in a press briefing:
“The immersed tunnel project is advancing rapidly. We have initiated the immersion of the seventh segment in parallel with the preparation of the tenth. This synchronization is designed to optimize time and enhance execution efficiency.”

He explained that the installation of the seventh segment will extend the completed tunnel length, including fixed approaches, to approximately 1,071 meters—representing a critical milestone that paves the way for the final closure phases in accordance with the established schedule. He noted that immersion operations are carefully timed to align with weather conditions, particularly the water current velocity in the Khor Al-Zubair Channel. These operations typically capitalize on mid-month periods of reduced current to transport and immerse the concrete segments.

Al-Fartousi added that the tenth segment’s proximity to land minimizes its exposure to water currents, which will facilitate faster installation and sealing. “We have therefore commenced its preparation,” he said, highlighting that internal tunnel works are progressing concurrently, including the installation of fire-resistant panels and the implementation of electrical and mechanical systems.

The immersed tunnel is a flagship component of the Al Faw Grand Port and stands as a unique project in the region. It serves as a vital logistical corridor linking both banks of the Khor Al-Zubair Channel and forms a key part of the infrastructure supporting the port, which is anticipated to become one of the most pivotal hubs for regional and international trade.
