Prime Minister Engineer Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani affirmed that the seawater desalination project in Basra Governorate represents a fundamental and sustainable solution to the water scarcity crisis, particularly in light of decreasing rainfall and reduced water releases.

This statement was made during the launch of the execution phase of the strategic project at Al-Faw Grand Port, which has a total production capacity of one million cubic meters per day—making it the largest desalination project in the region.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, alongside several local officials and technical experts.

The Prime Minister explained that the project had been transferred from the Ministry of Construction and Housing to the Basra Governorate to ensure its successful implementation.

He also noted that the government has prioritized the project as part of its public service agenda. It is being executed in partnership with the Iraqi Al-Ridha Company and the international Power China Company. The project is expected to provide approximately 3,500 job opportunities and serve more than four million residents.
