This project is among the largest water desalination initiatives in the country and falls within the government’s comprehensive vision to address water scarcity and provide sustainable resources to support the population and strategic industries, foremost among them the Al-Faw Grand Port project.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi stated, “The seawater desalination plant at Al-Faw Grand Port represents a pivotal strategic step within a series of projects supporting the port’s operational system. Its launch today, under the direct patronage of the Prime Minister, underscores the Iraqi government’s commitment to advancing sovereign mega-projects, particularly those tied to both water and economic security.”
He added, “The new plant will offer a total water capacity of one million cubic meters per day, making it the largest of its kind in Iraq. It will be directly employed to meet the operational and construction needs of Al-Faw Grand Port, including paving, infrastructure, and industrial services, in addition to serving as a stable water source for the surrounding environment.”
He continued, “This project was not merely a technical choice, but a strategic necessity due to water shortages in Iraq’s southern coastal regions and the declining flow rates from the Shatt al-Arab. This makes desalination technologies a long-term solution, especially with the commissioning of major industrial projects.”
He noted that “The General Company for Ports of Iraq, in collaboration with relevant ministries and sectoral authorities, has developed an integrated framework linking the desalination project with the port’s logistical services system, ensuring its sustainable operation.”
He affirmed, “We believe that integration between water, energy, and port projects is fundamental to building a modern Iraq with infrastructure capable of keeping pace with regional and global transformations in maritime transport and trade. The desalination project today embodies this vision in practice.”
It is worth noting that the plant will be implemented using the latest global technologies and will include advanced units for water treatment and purification in accordance with the highest environmental and health standards. It is part of a series of major projects underway in Basra Governorate aimed at strengthening infrastructure and services.
