The General Company for Ports of Iraq announced on Friday, June 20, 2025, the commencement of installing specialized offshore platforms to monitor and observe hydrographic phenomena in Iraq’s territorial waters.
This initiative is part of the critical implementation steps for Al Faw Grand Port project.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, the company’s Director General, stated that “technical and engineering teams affiliated with the Ports Authority have begun the installation of marine platforms, which include precision measurement units for tidal phenomena, wind speed, and ocean current directions”.
He affirmed that “these platforms form an essential infrastructure for collecting real-time, high-accuracy meteorological and hydrographic data, which will enhance the reliability of design studies for Al Faw Grand Port and support the construction and development phases with scientific and technical precision”.
He further explained that “the data gathered through this system will be utilized to improve maritime safety standards for the massive vessels expected to arrive in the future, and will contribute to developing accurate operational plans for managing the port in an effective and sustainable manner”.
It is noteworthy that this step aligns with a national vision to position Iraq as a strategic land and maritime logistics and commercial hub, and to transform Basra Governorate into a central maritime economic pillar at both regional and international levels.
