Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, confirmed that the container handling yard project within Terminal (A) at Al-Faw Grand Port is witnessing tangible progress in completion rates. He indicated that this yard represents one of the vital components in the port’s operational infrastructure, as it is located directly behind the five berths and is designated for receiving and handling containers arriving through them.
The Director General added that “the completion rate of the landfilling works in the container handling yard within Terminal (A) at elevation (+2) has reached 93%.”* He explained that “the volume of fill executed thus far exceeds 11 million cubic meters, reflecting the scale of engineering and logistical efforts dedicated to this strategic project.”
He noted that “soil improvement works are ongoing, particularly through the installation of vertical drainage pipes (PVD) in the areas of the fourth and fifth berths, in addition to executing surcharge operations in parts of the fourth berth. Meanwhile, unloading operations are currently underway in the third berth area following the completion of its surcharge stage.”
He also stated that “the first part of the container yard—which includes the areas of the first and second berths, along with the auxiliary services area—has been completed and has been preliminarily received.”
The Al-Faw Grand Port project represents a strategic step towards enhancing Iraq’s logistical and economic position. The project continues to make progress in its mission to become a vital maritime transport hub, supporting sustainable development and the national economy.
