The General Company for Ports of Iraq has reported significant progress in the construction of the immersed tunnel within Al Faw Grand Port project, marked by the successful placement and alignment of the third concrete segment. This phase is one of the most technically demanding stages of the project, requiring precision and advanced engineering coordination.
Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the company, stated, “The construction of the immersed tunnel within Al Faw Grand Port project is advancing significantly, with the successful alignment of the third concrete segment. This segment has now been placed precisely within the water channel.”
He further explained that “the alignment process took approximately 4 to 5 hours, culminating in the segment reaching its designated position and achieving an engineered bond with the second segment. This step marks a crucial milestone in the structural integration of the underwater tunnel.”
Regarding the technical dimensions of the completed section,he confirmed that “the total length of the immersed tunnel, following the alignment of the third segment, has reached 378 meters, in addition to 189 meters of the approach section in Um Qasr, which directly connects to the aquatic environment. This brings the total implemented length beneath the Khor Al-Zubair waterway to 567 meters as of today.”
He added that “the water depth above the third segment after alignment will be approximately 15 meters, ensuring the successful achievement of the required design depth according to the precise engineering standards adopted for this type of submerged tunnel.”
