Dr. Farhan Al-Farousi, Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, stated on Sunday, April 28, 2025, that the immersed tunnel project linking Al-Faw Port with the city of Um Qasr aims to serve citizens primarily, ahead of trade purposes.

The Director General of the GCPI mentioned that “the main idea of the immersed tunnel project is not only to connect Al-Faw Port with Um Qasr Port, but rather to link Al-Faw city entirely with Um Qasr, thereby opening the road to all citizens from different regions.”

He further emphasized that “the tunnel will be accessible not only to the residents of Al-Faw but will also serve those living in the surrounding areas. Additionally, it will serve as the ideal solution for citizens of Basra city wishing to reach Um Qasr, as they can pass through Al-Faw city to complete their activities there.”

He confirmed that “the road will be operational at the beginning of next year, contributing to facilitating movement and transportation between the two cities.”

Moreover, he pointed out that “the project stands as a significant step in infrastructure development, aimed at improving citizens’ lives and easing transportation, while also playing a role in enhancing commercial activity between ports and nearby areas.”

It is noteworthy that the immersed tunnel project between Al-Faw and Um Qasr is one of the major projects under the Al-Faw Grand Port initiative, designed to connect Iraqi ports with vital regions and bolster the efficiency of commercial operations and logistical services in the area.
