During the Iraqi Business Summit 2025, the Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, emphasized that Al-Faw Grand Port represents a pivotal project for restructuring Iraq’s maritime transportation sector and supply chains. He noted that the project has entered an advanced stage of implementation and is considered one of the key drivers of economic and strategic development in the country.
This declaration was made as part of his participation in a session titled “Transportation and Supply Chains: Restructuring Reform,” which was part of the inaugural Iraqi Business Summit (IBS 2025). The event brought together six vital economic sectors under one platform, marking a first-of-its-kind gathering.
In his speech, the Director General provided a detailed presentation on Al-Faw Grand Port, highlighting the project’s strategic vision aimed at transforming Iraq into a regional logistics hub connecting Asia and Europe via the “Development Road.”
He explained that “the geographic importance of the port places it at the heart of international initiatives concerned with cross-border trade, granting Iraq a competitive position on the global transportation map.”
He added, “The main projects at Al-Faw Grand Port are witnessing significant progress: the five berths project has reached 100% completion, the navigation channel project stands at 85%, the immersed tunnel has achieved 70%, the container yard has reached 89%, and the connecting road project has a 99% completion rate.”
He highlighted the development of an integrated electronic management system that includes modern protection and surveillance systems, in collaboration with major international companies such as Daewoo Engineering & Construction and the Italian company Technital.
The Director General called on investors to seize the opportunities available in logistics and trade, stating that these include “the establishment and operation of berths and warehouses, industrial and commercial zone projects, energy and marine support services, residential city development and accompanying infrastructure, as well as partnerships with the private sector across various fields.”
He pointed out that “Al-Faw Grand Port will contribute to the creation of thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities, in addition to enhancing Iraq’s position in global supply chains.” He affirmed that “the port is not just a local project but a strategic international connection.”
He concluded his speech by revealing a roadmap for the full commercial operation of the port as part of a carefully planned future expansion. He also invited regional and international investors to be part of this qualitative economic transformation taking place in Iraq.
