The General Company for Ports of Iraq announced today, Thursday, April 3, 2025, the completion of the reclamation works for waterlogged areas as part of the construction of the container yard, a significant component of Al Faw Grand Port Project.

Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the company, stated that “the company executing Al Faw Grand Port Project has completed the reclamation works for the waterlogged areas in the container yard, marking a substantial advancement in the project’s implementation.” He explained that “the works have now transitioned to land preparation to align the yard with the requirements of the five docks.”

He elaborated that “over 10.5 million cubic meters of various types of (sub-base) materials have been utilized, reaching a depth of up to seven meters. Approximately three million cubic meters remain to complete the final layer of the yard’s section.”

Additionally, he noted that “the container yard spans an area of 2,000 meters in length and 600 meters in width, with a storage capacity of up to 3.5 million containers annually, making it one of the largest facilities within the project.”

He further highlighted that “the overall progress in the construction of the container yard has reached approximately 89%, surpassing the planned schedule.”

Al Faw Grand Port is considered one of Iraq’s most prominent strategic economic projects. It is anticipated to transform the country into a pivotal hub for maritime transport and trade by connecting it to global logistics corridors, thereby boosting the national economy and providing thousands of job opportunities.
