The Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, announced significant progress today, Thursday, March 13, 2025, in the implementation of the connecting road project between Al-Faw Grand Port and Um Qasr, passing through the immersed tunnel—one of the key projects of Al-Faw Grand Port project, which spans a distance of 62 kilometers.

The General Director stated, “The work on the connecting road project between Al-Faw Grand Port and Um Qasr is progressing steadily,” adding that “the project includes the construction of two main lanes extending over a length of 62 kilometers, with the addition of three roundabouts, two overpasses, and an intersection, which will greatly facilitate traffic between the port and the city of Um Qasr.”

He continued, “The two main bridges in the project, the first spanning 800 meters and the second spanning 250 meters, are fundamental components for easing transportation between the southern ports and other areas across Iraq.”

He explained that “the project is proceeding according to the specified timeline, with the completion rate of the first bridge reaching approximately 98%, while the second bridge is about 97% complete.”

He pointed out that “current operations in the project include paving multiple layers, including asphalting a portion of the road, in addition to the two bridges.”

He emphasized that “the implementing company is exerting maximum effort to execute the project according to the highest standards of quality and safety,” noting that “the project is progressing smoothly and with absolute precision, and work continues at a rapid pace to achieve further progress in the coming days.”

He added that “this vital project will have a significant impact on improving land transportation between the southern ports in Iraq, thereby enhancing Iraq’s position as a regional and international trade hub.”

It is noteworthy that Al-Faw Grand Port project is part of ongoing efforts to improve Iraq’s transportation infrastructure. It represents a crucial step toward boosting the competitive capacity of Iraqi ports on both regional and international levels and contributes to advancing the national economy.
