The Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, announced today, Monday, February 24, 2025, that there has been significant progress in the project connecting Al Faw Grand Port to Um Qasr, which extends over a distance of 62 km and is one of the five main projects at the port. The project completion rate has reached 97%.
The Director General of the company stated, “The implementation of the project connecting Al Faw Grand Port to Um Qasr is progressing steadily,” noting that “the overall completion rate of the project has reached 97%.”
He explained that “the first layer of the road on the Faw City side has been completed in full, and the second layer has also been completed. Only parts of the third layer remain, including 9 km on the return direction and 26 km on the departure direction.”
He added, “Regarding the project from the Um Qasr side, the first layer has been fully completed, and only some work remains on the second layer, in addition to completing the third layer.”
He pointed out that “all the work on the safety wall on both lanes (departure and return) has been completed, lighting has been installed between Faw City and the immersed tunnel, and the necessary traffic signals have been installed.”
He continued that “the road being implemented consists of three lanes over a length of 62 km, and includes three roundabouts and two flyovers, in addition to an intersection.” He noted that “these components will improve traffic between Al Faw Grand Port and Um Qasr, enhancing road transport and facilitating loading and unloading operations through the port.”
This project is considered one of the strategic projects that contribute to enhancing the efficiency of the transportation infrastructure in Iraq and reflects the Ministry of Transport’s commitment to improving and enhancing the competitiveness of Iraqi ports at the regional and international levels. It is one of the prominent projects of Al Faw Grand Port.
