Continuing his historic visit to Iraq, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, conducted a field tour on the second day, which included the Al-Faw Grand Port projects in Basra Governorate. He showed great interest in the developments of the project and its strategic importance for international navigation and trade.

The international official was accompanied on his tour by the Iraqi Minister of Transport, Professor Razak Mohibis Al-Saadawi, the Governor of Basra, Engineer Asaad Al-Eidani, the Iraqi Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Jafar Al-Sadr, and the Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Dr. Engineer Farhan Al-Fartousi, along with several local officials. The tour aimed to closely observe the achievements and developments in the project, which is considered one of the most important maritime projects in the region and the world. They reviewed the projects of the five berths, the container terminal, and the depths in the port.

During the tour, the Secretary-General expressed his great admiration for the progress made by Iraq in this huge project, reflecting the Iraqi government’s commitment to developing maritime infrastructure and enhancing the national economy. He confirmed the IMO’s readiness to provide continuous support to enhance Iraq’s capabilities in this vital sector, praising the achievements made so far.

For his part, the Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Dr. Engineer Farhan Al-Fartousi, praised the significant interest shown by the IMO in the project, affirming that “Iraqi ports seek to keep up with the latest global developments in maritime transport to achieve the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness.”

He added that “this visit is an important step towards strengthening relations between Iraq and the IMO, with a focus on the importance of vital projects,” pointing out that “Al-Faw Grand Port will enhance maritime infrastructure in Iraq and achieve sustainable economic goals in the future.”

This visit is an important step towards enhancing cooperation between Iraq and the IMO, and it is expected to contribute to improving and expanding Iraq’s role in global maritime trade, thereby strengthening Iraq’s position on the international trade map and contributing to the achievement of Iraq’s vision for sustainable economic renaissance.
