Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani Oversees the Arrival of 5 Berths at Al Faw Grand Port
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani supervised the receipt of 5 berths for Al Faw Grand Port in Basra, which were completed by the Korean company executing the project. These berths are now operational.
In his speech during the ceremony, Al-Sudani described the berths as the “backbone” of the first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed next year according to the scheduled timeline. He confirmed that the port has already received large commercial vessels with deep drafts, enhancing Iraq’s ability to handle global cargo shipments.
Al-Sudani emphasized that Al Faw Grand Port is a key hub in the global trade network, particularly in the Middle East, which holds strategic importance for international trade. He added that the port will enhance Iraq’s role as a maritime country on the Gulf, helping to transition Iraq from a nation reliant on the ports of others to a major commercial center in the region.
In the same context, the Prime Minister confirmed that the project is part of the “Development Road” plan, which aims to connect Iraq to neighboring countries and promote economic integration. He also mentioned that the government is supporting railway rehabilitation projects that will serve this route.
Al-Sudani further stated that the Iraqi government is committed to completing this monumental project, which is one of the key initiatives to diversify the national economy, boost non-oil revenues, and create new industrial cities around the port.
He commended the efforts of the Iraqi Ports Authority in developing the project and clarified that the government is working to attract global operators and select the most suitable economic model to achieve maximum commercial benefit from the port.
